1) Do I know who I want to be?
A life of satisfaction and achievement comes when we are uncompromising and ruthless in our loyalty to ourselves and our true well-being. Otherwise, the danger is that we are lost in our busy work and aren’t clear why.
One way to getting clear on this is to find out your strengths and values. A free assessment is available here. Strengths can be considered your values in action, and is a great way to connect you what really matters and who you want to be. Check that what you’re busy with aligns with your strengths and values, so that you can maximise your sense of achievement and direction, even while you’re incredibly busy!
And know that this question is a BIG one, so even if there isn’t a clear answer, it’s enough to keep on asking the question! After all, as we will keep learning and evolving, the answer might change but the question keeps us honest with ourselves through the journey!
2) Do I give myself permission to completely switch off?
A friend of mine recently cancelled a 6 week block of time off, but jokingly said – well, now, I’ll just have to take that same 6 weeks in 5 minute increments here and there!
The issue is the same with 6 weeks and 5 minutes. In this day and age, with remote working and our digital devices, we never quite completely switch off. So we’re always a little ‘on’. That can keep us stuck in a frazzled state that compounds our already intense work schedules and overactive minds. Clarity and focus will be hard to come by.
Try giving yourself strict ’time out’s – scheduling periods where you are 100% allowed to get away from anything work related. Remove yourself from your digital devices if needed – for example, go for a walk without your phone, or assign a device-free space in your house. Start to draw some healthy boundaries around your mental and emotional space through switching off. Then notice the clarity and focus creeping back in when this space is created.
3) Who am I if I’m not busy?
Over time, ‘busy’ becomes a habit energy that drives us forward. So honestly, we don’t know what to do if we’re not busy. We don’t know who we are when we’re not busy!
Deprogramming ourselves might take a little time, because it can be hard to cut through our busy habits of mind and our hectic lifestyles to see clearly. So taking time to reflect is crucial for a life well lived.
